Overview
All classes, tutoring and clinics are based on the philosophy that the best way to learn is to physically do it yourself, with your own hands on your own bike. Students work on their own bicycles, which gives more active time for them to absorb the information and really feel how things work. The lessons go beyond the basics into the tricks and tips that mechanics use every day.
Tools, space and work stands are provided for the courses. Class and tutoring location is in a small, private studio space in NE Portland at the Gracie's Wrench Workshop unless otherwise noted. Students bring their bicycles, parts, rags and eagerness to learn.
Learn where to put your hands, how to push, pull or manhandle your bike (as you’ll find it sometimes needs a little extra coaxing) to get the job done. At Gracie's Wrench, mistakes are welcome as they provide an opportunity to see what can go wrong and how to fix it, as well as extra experience in a supportive environment.

Intermediate Review Class
Re-enforce your learning! We've heard from our Tune-up course graduates that they want a bit more guided practice and would enjoy delving deeper into some parts of the bike. For those students who've already taken the Basic Tune-up Course but would like to hone and advance their mechanical skills, we're now offering Advanced Review Classes.
Each 3-4 hour session is intended as a faster-paced, in-depth version of the Tune-up Class to give students reinforcement and add onto the concepts already learned.
- Session 1:Offers a chance to review brakes (including pad adjustment, cable replacement and centering) and derailleurs (including front and rear derailleur adjustments, installation, and cable replacement).
- Session 2:Offers a more in-depth look at bearings, a chance to practice adjusting hubs, removing and installing bottom brackets, taking apart and overhauling headsets and a review of wheel truing.
Each class has a two student maximum. It's important not to have more than two students per class as the most important aspect of our classes is individualized learning. Classes are held at the Gracie's Wrench Workshop in NE Portland.
Cost: $150 per student, per class session (does not include on-line registration fees)
